Third whitepaper published by RiverSource Institute – “Fourth Quarter 2006 Capital Markets Outlook” also released
MINNEAPOLIS – (Nov. 3, 2006) – RiverSource Institute, a resource of RiverSource Investments, LLC, a subsidiary of Ameriprise Financial, Inc. (NYSE: AMP), released its latest white paper titled “The End of Performance Chasing: Managing Money to Help Meet Your Goals.” The paper is available at riversource.com/institute.
Studies of investor behavior have consistently shown that individual investors chase performance – their decision to purchase an investment is based solely on recent outperformance – rather than focus on an investment strategy that can help enable them to meet their long-term financial goals.
But performance chasing is beginning to yield to a new way of thinking. A movement toward goal-based investing has emerged as evidenced by the growing popularity of goal-based investment solutions designed for the complex needs of today’s investors.
“It’s not necessary for investors to beat the market in order to meet their investment goals, such as saving for retirement,” said David Joy, chief market strategist, RiverSource Investments. “Earning consistent, competitive returns over time is more likely to produce success for the individual investor.”
What differentiates goal-based investing is a well-defined and clearly articulated connection between client-specific goals and investment strategies. Rather than trying to boost performance by simply chasing the latest hot fund, financial advisors help clients set achievable expectations and use products with a repeatable and disciplined investment process. This approach can provide a yardstick against which clients can measure progress toward their goals rather than simply using traditional benchmarks such as the S&P 500 index.
“Investors’ changing needs increasingly call for goal-based solutions,” said Andrew Washburn, vice president of marketing, RiverSource Funds. “The objective is to increase the probability of meeting the investor’s expected return.”
“The End of Performance Chasing: Managing Money to Help Meet Your Goals” examines the factors influencing a shift from performance chasing toward goal-based investing, the basic principles of goal-based investing, and investment solutions that are designed to support a goal-based approach.
Also available through RiverSource Institute is the Fourth Quarter 2006 Capital Markets Outlook, the quarterly investment perspective of the Capital Markets Committee, which is comprised of senior investment professionals at RiverSource Investments and chaired by Joy.
For the fourth quarter, the committee reestablished an overweight in equities, including an overweight internationally. In the U.S., it recommends an overweight in large-caps and growth and maintained minimum exposure to real estate.
The committee also reestablished an underweight in fixed income with a modest overweight in foreign bonds. In the U.S., the focus is on high quality as credit spreads remain tight.
